Knowing Rockford, on the Little River
Rockford’s name goes back to a rocky ford on the Little River, which early 1800s travelers used between Knoxville and Maryville and called “Rocky Ford.” The city covers about 3.2 square miles of northern Blount County and had 822 residents in 2020.
The Rockford Manufacturing Company ran a cordage factory here, and its old low-head dam is on the Little River. A 1930 Southern Railway bridge also crosses the Little River in town, so the story of Rockford runs along the water.
Rockford incorporated in the early 1970s to avoid annexation by either of its larger neighbors, Alcoa or Maryville. Rockford Elementary is on Williams Mill Road, and the 2020 census counted the small city as roughly half urban and half rural.
