Knowing Walland and Miller’s Cove
Walland is an unincorporated community in Miller’s Cove, with 281 people in the 2020 census count, though ZIP 37886 covers a much wider area. Chilhowee Mountain walls the cove in to the north, and the Little River splits the cove in two.
The community is named for the Walton and England Leather Company tannery of the 1890s, later the Schlosser Leather tannery. The tannery company built Chilhowee Inn in 1902, and Miller’s Cove Baptist Church was formed in 1810, well before the tannery.
US 321 runs through Walland toward Great Smoky Mountains National Park, whose boundary is about 15 miles south. Walland Elementary is on East Miller’s Cove Road, and the Foothills Parkway section from Walland to Wears Valley opened in November 2018.
